I didn’t really like anything. The front desk made me carry my bag up 4 flights of stairs. The room was so hot when I got inside. There was no coffee in the rooms at all and I asked multiple time for it. The shower was also clogged.

San Jose as city is not too much to believe as other cities and is a crowded city We stayed at the outside skirts of San Jose where you have more nature, mountains/scenery and less city life and visited the city several times.

If you like a big city, San Jose is great.
If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.
The only proper modern hotel in our stay in Costa Rica, modelled on the Western standards. Large room with a huge bed, table, chest of drawers, closet with iron and board, spacious bathroom with a powerfull shower - all in a good state. The buffet style breakfast was varied and tasty. Central pool looked big - although we didn't use it.
There's an area with several restaurans nearby and hotel provides free shuttles to the aiport which was handy.
Great little property close to downtown - easy access to public transportation. The owners of the property made us feel very welcome - the rooms are small but have all the essentials that you need for a stay in San Jose - very comfortable beds, well appointed bathroom and the in room safe. A delicious breakfast was also included in the room rate - with the option to purchase more if you so desire - but bread, jam and poached eggs were great.
We stayed at Barcelo as the first hotel for our Honeymoon after our flight to San Jose for 2 nights. The staff were so friendly, they left us a lovely Honeymoon surprise and loved the free snack room with food and drinks :) a huge breakfast selection which was lovely. We loved the pool area and it was just the perfect place to relax after our flight and settle into Costa Rica!
Charming place in the very centre of San José. Nice, refreshing pool and warm jacuzzi. The breakfast is served a la carte (you have three options to choose from). All of them come with good coffee and fresh fruits. The hotel provides a very good base to explore the capital and prepare for the rest of your journey in Costa Rica.
Very nice owners!
The hostel is located in a central area of San José. It a villa from the '50-'60 converted into a hostel with private and dorms.
The rooms and the common areas are suggestive, and you can still see the former use as a private house.
Bathrooms and rooms are not modern, but that is the charm of this hotel.
Cute hotel in a heritage building just outside the central district of San Jose. Super friendly and helpful staff, comfortable rooms, great location. The cafe/breakfast area is beautiful and there is a fantastic restaurant attached to the hotel. Great option for a night or two in San Jose!
We stayed here at the beginning and end of our holiday in Costa Rica and everything was perfect. The staff were all very considerate and helpful, and the airport transfer organised through the hotel worked really well. The breakfast and pool area was also lovely! Pura Vida!
Beautiful hotel tucked away in a quiet part of San Jose overlooking the city. The pool area and gardens were beautiful and they had a lovely communal space to relax in.
The room was huge and very comfortable. The staff were very helpful and breakfast was good.
Loved this hotel. Stayed here before and as good as I remembered. The room is very large, clean and comfortable with an amazing bed.
The bar and restaurant are both great with very helpful staff.
Not far from down town San Jose . Parking
Decent pool area
It is in a great location if you want to be in San Jose (Costa Rica). You get to walk to places and many taxi near. Also they have got a very good restaurant. It is not obvious the restaurant is part of the hotel but I think it is.
Hotel is very new. Very well located. In front of a park
New moder. People is very friendly like in all Costa Rica experience we had. Good also for business
Room is clean and modern
Great place to stay in San Jose
Great area not far from San Jose. The swimming pool on top of the hotel with the fantastic view of the nearby mountains. Also the huge tree with the surround sitting area at the entrance area.
I loved the location, it is just in the downtown of San Jose, plus everything is around the corner, food, tourist places, parks, museums. All that just in a 5-minute walk.
So comfortable. Great food. Fast check in/out. Convenient location. Amazing staff. We have stayed in many, many hotels in the San Jose area, this is now number one.
Old San José property but super quaint. Old open floor plan… outdoor courtyard… rooms a comfortable size… absolute great location for downtown… unbeatable price.
