I didn't know what to expect but picked Leeuwarden as a central spot for exploring Friesland. It is a beautiful town that is the perfect size to get around easily. There was so much more to do here than I expected and could easily have stayed for a week or more without getting bored. It was easy to walk to great museums, restaurants and shopping.
My children highly recommended the Nature Museum which was very interactive and good for children of all ages and adults too.
We enjoyed shopping in the Blokhuispoort and taking to the artisans about their sustainability story.
We stayed at the Post Plaza Hotel and highly recommend it.
Next time, I will go in spring/summer/fall and rent a bike to explore even more. Very bike friendly city.

The city is a perfect example of how to combine the old with the new. The architecture is very nice to observe, the people are friendly, there's a lot going on on the streets so it's never boring and there are also a lot of quiet places by the canals where you can get a moment of rest. There are not a lot of things that would be specifically aimed at tourists which adds a very nice wibe as you get the sense that the atmosphere is very genuine.

Friesland is a beautiful area of the Netherlands.
Friesland is a beautiful area of the Netherlands. Leeuwarden itself is a busy tourist town with lots of things to see and lots of shops and restaurants. Like many of the surrounding villages (for example Franeker) it is full of old, historic buildings. The sea is not far away and you should definitely try a guided mud walk (wadlopen) when the tide is out.
A few kilometers to the south of Leeuwarden you will find De Alde Feanen National Park. Rent a bike in Grou and cycle along one of the many marked cycle routes.

I've only stayed two days for a conference, it wasn't sufficient to discover the town.
From what I could experience, Leeuwarden is a pleasant place with historical sites. It's great for walking and biking, has a lot of restaurants for all the tastes.
At the same time, everything is quite expensive, from accommodation to food.

This was a very charming little city, with lovely, bricklined streets, a stunning architecture, and lovely, local businesses lining broad streets with canals running down the middle. I didn't eat 'out' while I was there, I just purchased food from the various supermarkets, which provided excellent fare for a reasonable price.
This is an exceedingly easy city to get around in. The historic "core" is small and compact and easily walkable.

I went there to visit a friend.
I went there to visit a friend. I stayed on Monday night and I was told Mondays are quiet as many places close on Mondays. But I enjoyed the quiet surroundings indeed.
Yes, it is small but lovely. And it is easy to get around. Well, avoid Monday as most places close on Monday.
About 30 min walk from the city center (a bus line is also an option). The room was nice and clean, industrial style interior design. A comfy bed, breakfast a la carte gives a feeling of a real restaurant experience. We liked the fact that the hotel was run by the students of the hotel school, extra polite and obviously well-taught. A prior dinner reservation at the hotel restaurant is required (a nice menu for a more than a reasonable price). Therefore we couldn't dine there on the evening of arrival, which is understandable.
Location and comfort. We were in Leeuwarden for a specific event. So long as you pay for extras you get what you hope for. The residence is very nice although the decor is a bit odd. Our stay was a single night and we only asked for early check-in, which we did get. The experience is all highly impersonal. An easy way to NHL Stenden for graduation ceremony. An easy walk to restaurants in the evening.
The hotel is centrally located to everything you need and walking the entire area is super easy to navigate. It took only minutes and I was down at the canals and the shopping/walk ways. My room was quiet, spacious and clean, the bed ultra comfortable (can’t remember when I slept that well in a hotel), had a refrigerator that worked, a coffee maker and a water kettle. I will definitely stay again.
Great location: (very) short distance to the center of Leeuwarden, easy parking (free in front of the house, thanks to the host) and easy to leave the city by car. Very friendly and helpful host. Lots of space and comfort (umbrella included ;-) )
the room we got was facing scaffoldings, so we asked for a replacement. we ended up staying at the next door hotel Via Via which was excellent!
breakfast was still at the postplaza so we got to enjoy both
You get more for your money then at other hotels! The whole hotel looks very nice and stylish, the room was very comfortable, clean and up to date. The staff is very nice!
This is a really nice hotel. Loved the interior, the room was very comfortable and modern. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I have really enjoyed my stay here
A good quiet hotel , nice rooms , helpful staff , when you realy want to rest after days of travelling, it can be the place to do that and in affordable price.
The location, the bed, the lights, the shower, the shared area, the check-in/out system. We also received a welcome drink voucher at the wonderful Post Plaza.
I've stayed in other hotels in same chain elsewhere in Holland and this is the best one yet! While by a busy road the double glazing kept the noise out.
