The Gateway to the Arctic

Unique, arty, traditional and lively pretty much sums up the great mix that the island of Tromsø has to offer. The city is home to the unique Arctic Cathedral, an array of pubs, cafés and an energetic street culture.

If you’re planning a day of sightseeing be sure to visit Tromsø Museum, Polar Museum, the University Museum of Tromsø, Mack Brewery, and the Arctic Alpine Botanic Garden.

The city’s main square often holds a variety of markets and its streets are lined with colourful and old-style buildings and houses. Tromsø is one of the best places to view the amazing colours of the Northern Lights.

This city is an amazing location to go on a Aurora Borealis tour! Marianne's expertise and commitment to helping travelers achieve their dream of seeing the Aurora is unmatched. I highly recommend booking multiple nights with her like we did. So good to support a local woman owned business. https://www.chasethelighttours.co.uk/

    Compact, uncrowded, clean city.

Compact, uncrowded, clean city. Traditional wooden buildings give it a fairy tale look. Great view of mountains across the harbour. The Troll Museum is a must. Take the cable car to view the island from above and enjoy the Northern Lights.

    A matter of "good fortune".

A matter of "good fortune". While we were fortunate to see the "Northern Lights" on the "Aurora Dinner Cruise", the people on cruises for the 2 previous days did not. Similarly, while we did use the cable car, it closed later that day at noon & had been closed for the 2 prior days, due to high winds. Shops, restaurants, cafes & museums were all within waking distance of the centrally placed Hotel [Clarion Collection Hotel With]. The Arctic Best Airport Express transfer coach [FB92] was directly outside the Airport Arrivals Hall, took just 15mins to get to central Tromso the Hotel was insight & just a 2mins walk from the drop-off station. Very welcoming people.

Tromso has a good range of shops, restaurants and cafes and a number of museums, some quirky like the Troll museum. It is the starting point for all your artic excursions, from cruising the local fjords, chasing the Northern Lights, reindeer sleighing, skiing etc There is also the fjellheisen cable car that gives you breathtaking views of Tromso and in the evening a chance to see the Northern Lights above the city scape.

Tromso is a lovely little city, but as we were there at high season, it was very touristy and overcrowded. We are not a big fan of tours or crowds, so we chose to drive out to Sommaroy island and and spend most of our time there. We stayed at Sommaroy Arctic Hotel. It was really nice and quiet. Less expensive than Tromso hotels. The island is absolutely gorgeous and you can see Northern Lights from the property or one of the many beaches. You do not have to take a $500 tour. But if you are in Tromso only for sightseeing and tours, you need to stay in Tromso.

    So beautiful!

So beautiful! Friendly people, and the wonderful outdoors to experience. We learned about the Sami people, saw the Northern Lights, snowshoed, fed reindeer, and sailed to fjords. Absolutely amazing! We relied on the Tromso taxi company and they were terrific.

I already filled out the survey I was sent via email, but I want to say it here again :) Hotel was perfectly situated. Close to the center and the harbour, as well as shops and bus stops. Very easy to take the bus from the airport and then it's a walk of about 3 min. Everything was clean, staff was very friendly. I didn't book my stay with breakfast, but there is water, coffee, tea and biscuits available 24/7 which I find a great service. Also on my first night I could see the northern lights though my bedroom window ;)

Considering the prices for hotels in Norway, this was reasonably priced. The kitchen in the room saves more money by avoiding eating at restaurants. The hotel's location is convenient and central. The heating worked amazingly despite the intense cold outdoors, the bed was comfortable and the WiFi helped cope with the lack of sunlight. Noises were minimally heard, perhaps since the hotel was quite empty. The lady at the reception was super friendly and helpful

Super experience staying at MelisHome Aurora Observatory! John is really flexible, and was so helpful in giving me and my partner lifts to and from here, even with short notice! The place itself has all you need, plus the added bonus of being away from Tromso city and away in the valleys, by the fjord means that you can step out and likely to see the northern lights - we saw them on our first night! A perfect stay, thank you so much John!

The location is very accessible in the middle of the town, very close to Hurtigruten terminal and bus terminal to northern Norway, like Alta, and Finland, direct bus to Levi and Rovaniemi. The view over the fjord and arctic cathedral is amazing. Sauna and gym on top of the hotel and free coffee anytime in the lobby. The staff is very nice and polite. Bus station to the airport just in front of the hotel.

We stayed in the standard twin bedroom. We loved the design and the cosiness of the room and the common areas. The beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was squeaky clean. The hotel is conveniently located close to supermarkets, bars and bus stops, including the airport bus stop. We also loved the self-check-in (it was our first time in Norway so we didn't know that could be a thing).

Above a bakery - ideal for breakfast; early morning prep and ovens very quiet. Nice views of the harbour and redeveloped slipway from our room. Not too close or too far away from the centre or supermarket. Very close to great public transport - bus #42 from airport stops 1 min walk from property - use tromso bus app. For Norway it was great value in September 2022

This is a great hotel option in Tromso. Everything is very close in the downtown, and this is right in the heart. Rooms are modern, and the breakfast was fantastic. There is a great Texas shuffle board table in the lounge with free coffee and sparkling water. We took the airport express bus, and the stop is 200 m away.
